Keith standing behind motorbike at Thai gas station

Hi I’m Keith…

I love to travel. I love the journey and the thrill that comes from discovering new places, new food and new cultures. I don’t think that there is a more exciting feeling than boarding a bus, train or plane and knowing that you are heading into the unknown. And that In the next few days or weeks you are going to taste new flavours, hear new sounds, see new things. You’ll meet fascinating people and learn something more about the world.

I’ve been traveling ever since I got my first job at 17 years old. Initially I bought package tours but soon became frustrated with how short term and limiting that experience always was. Eventually I started to dream about just buying a plane ticket, taking a small backpack and just heading off with no plans. After a trial run to Thailand for 6 weeks I was hooked and haven’t stopped traveling since.

 The Real Journey Starts

I hated my job as a salesman and life also felt so mundane. So, I quit. I felt that the time was right to finally head off and see the world. I took a job in a warehouse and worked 7 days a week for almost six months to save up. At the same time I also studied for a TEFL certificate as a back up plan for when the funds ran dry (I knew I wouldn’t want to go home). So at 28 years old I found myself in Shanghai with a backpack, some money and no real plans.

Fast forward over ten years and I’m still in Asia. In Thailand to be exact. Over the past decade I have been lucky enough to live in China, India, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Russia and Laos. In each of those countries I worked as a teacher but took every opportunity to travel. In between those places I also traveled to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Ukraine, Iran, Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan.

Traveling to those countries changed my life and changed me as a person. I used to think that England was the centre of the Universe and that ‘our’ way of life was the norm. Travel has broadened my horizons and given me a better sense of perspective on the world. It has also fueled my desire to see more and to never stop traveling.

Why did I start Experience Thailand?

Because I love Thailand. Out of all the countries that I have travelled to Thailand has been the only one that keeps pulling me back. Every time I leave I immediately start planning how quickly I can return. I dream about eating pad krapow moo saap with a cool Beer Leo or jumping in a songthaew to head into town. There is just something about this country that gets under my skin. I’m thousands of miles from home but I feel perfectly at home here. Everything from the climate, the people, the food, the landscape…I just love it here and want to help you make the best of your journey to this amazing country.

What’s the goal of this site?

Simple. To share my experience of both living and travelling in Thailand over many years. I have been a package tourist, backpacker and resident here and have experienced highs and lows. I’ve made mistakes that could’ve been avoided if I’d been given some simple advice before hand. If I can make your time in Thailand more enjoyable by sharing what I know then that makes me happy.

Happy Travels!
